Zbor svetega Nikolaja Litija

Zbor svetega Nikolaja Litija (The Saint Nicholas Choir Litija, Slovenia) consists of over 45 young singers connected by the power and sincerity of spiritual music. Since its foundation the choir has evolved into the finest vocal group and become renowned in Slovenia and abroad by performing on Slovene grand stages, participating at services at the local church and regularly touring abroad - in Austria (2001, 2006, 2007), Italy (2004, 2005, 2011), Croatia (2006), France (2007), Switzerland (2008), Belgium (2013) and Ireland (2015).

The choir excels above all in melodious, convincing music performance of compositions from different music eras and has received many awards and special awards at national and international choir competitions. Its highest achievements are the first place and a golden plaque at the 19th Slovene choir competition Naša Pesem 2005 in Maribor, second place and all of the special awards at the 7th international choral competition in Maribor 2004, third place in the monographic programme at the 45th international choir competition C. A. Seghizzi 2006 in Italy, first place at the international choral competition "Venezia in Musica" in Venice in Italy 2011, first place at the international choral competition Maasmechelen 2013 in Belgium and first place at the international choral competition Derry 2015 in Ireland. The choir's first recorded CD Božična Luč (The Christmas Light) 2003 has enraptured all friends of choral music with selected translated works of the English composer John Rutter. The quality of the choir has been greatly enhanced by the cooperation with one of the world's greatest experts on gospel and spiritual music Paul A. Smith from the USA. On its 10th anniversary the choir published a CD Sacra Religio, which contains masterworks from the spiritual music treasury of Slovene and foreign composers of various time periods.

Zbor sv. Nikolaja has cooperated with many renowned artists and ensembles, i.e. the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and conductor David de Villiers, trumpeter Stanko Arnold, baritonist Marcos Fink, pianist Zoran Škrinjar, the Luwigana Symphony Orchestra, conductor, André J. Thomas, Vlado Kreslin and maestro Valerij Gergijev. Celebrated Slovenian composers have written new compositions for the Zbor sv. Nikolaja choir – Damijan Močnik, Ambrož Čopi, Črt Sojar Voglar, Blaž Pucihar, Nana Forte, Peter Šavli and Ivan Florjanc.

The Zbor sv. Nikolaja Choir is under the patronage of Nova Kultura Litija cultural organisation and is a member of the European choir union Europa Cantat. From its foundation in 1997 it has been led by Helena Fojkar Zupančič with the help of Janez Klobčar.

Helena Fojkar Zupančič - conductor

Helena Fojkar Zupančič, a music pedagogue and an academic musician - soloist, works as a conductor and music pedagogue at the Škofijska klasična gimnazija and Gimnazija Litija grammar schools. With the Zbor sv. Nikolaja choir and the Girls Choir of the Diocesan Classical grammar school she has received numerous awards at national and international competitions. She is considered to be one of the most celebrated Slovene choir conductors and is an esteemed lecturer at seminars for school choir conductors and church musicians. She devotes special attention to vocal techniques, clear diction and the interlacement of lyrics and music.
