Čist druga pesem - Maribor 2003

Čist' druga pesem or "An Entirely Different Song" was the amusing part of the 18th Slovenian choral competition Naša Pesem in Maribor 2003. The participant choirs had to present folk, artistically or any other songs and musical jokes in their own original way. The competition is organized by the JSKD (Republic of Slovenia Public Fund for Cultural Activities), the Union of Slovenian Cultural Societies and the township of Maribor. Four choirs applied for this competition, which was reviewed by an expert jury, presided by Mitja Gobec.

This competition brings a different approach and a different way of communication between the singers-actors and the audience but most of all plenty of laughter. The Zbor sv. Nikolaja (Saint Nicholas Choir) also took part in this competition and by doing so presented its musical and acting abilities to the public.

Performed programme:

  • G.F. Handler: The Last Moments of Julius Caesar (the last act from this opera - "the Murder in the Roman Baths")

  • Breda Šček: Le pridi, le pridi, sem sama doma (the male and female version of the song).

"We didn't have much trouble preparing for this performance, since laughter has always been present at our practice hours. We are also a very social choir, we like to "hang out". Therefore we virtually didn't have many preparations - we just had to let our imagination free. Our biggest problem was the fact that only the public was supposed to laugh while we had to be death-serious. Considering our vivid imagination this was extremely hard to achieve, so of course we were laughing along..."

The Zbor sv. Nikolaja received multiple awards, including the award for the choir with the most sense for choral humor. We were granted a TV-presentation and some ice-cream to cool down our vocal chords. We also received an informal visit from two members of the "Institute for bass science". They clarified the reasons for founding this informal ťInstituteŤ, enumerated the results of numerous field investigations regarding the "oppression of basses" and presented us with articles, published by the institute. After that they gave away three awards; the award for a bass-friendly program (this award was not given to any of the choirs, since such program doesn't exist), the award for a bass-friendly choir and the award for a choir that wouldn't get any award. After that the institute members declared Mihela Jagodic for the first "bassador" of bass science.
