10th International Choral Competition Maribor 2009

The 10th international competition of choirs Maribor 2009 lasted from 17th to 19th April. It took place in the Union Hall in Maribor. For the first time this competition was a part of competitions for the Great Prize of Europe and 12 choirs from Spain, Italy, Hungary, Latvia, Romania, Sweden, Finland, Ireland, Indonesia and Slovenia took part.

Zbor sv. Nikolaja choir with the conductor Helena Fojkar Zupančič performed very well and in the keen competition won a place in the final Grand Prix, where it came 4th with 86,7 points. Along with the obligatory songs its programme contained several contemporary works. Among them the most astonishing was Cloudburst by Eric Whitacrea with a rich scene, and music by Veronika Hauptman (piano) and Anže Maček (big drum).

“We are very pleased with all the preparations for the competition, because they were carried out with enthusiasm and the atmosphere was completely relaxed. We are pleased with our performance on the stage as well. Despite keen competition our wish to go to the finals was realised, and the fourth place was even a better surprise. Our greatest joy is the fact that we sang as we hoped to and that we presented all our qualities. Neither the jury not the audience in the hall oversaw that.”

The first place went to the choirs KUP Taldea with the conductor Gabriel Baltes, Spain, and Komorni zbor Ave with the conductor Andraž Hauptman, Slovenia. They both got 91,7 points. Due to better result in several categories the latter will sing in the finals for the Grand Prize of Europe in Tolosa, Spain, as the representative of the competition in Maribor.
